Why Discuss Self Esteem in a Forum for Public Speaking?

Oleh:  Monika Sugiarto

Dear Managers,

Why Discuss Self Esteem in a Forum for Public Speaking?
If you want to become an excellent speaker, trainer, consultant or coach you have to be a successful communicator first and outmost. Your abilities to communicate in turn depend on your self esteem. A healthy and balanced self esteem will make it easier to learn and practice the necessary skills and techniques for excellent communication. This in turn increases your success not only in the speaking business, but in every facet of your life.

Great orators are not born. None of the well known successful orators was born with a special speaking gene. None of them has ever eloquently and with wit asked for his/her milk. Unforgettable speakers are made. They work hard, untiringly and constantly on improving their knowledge and skills. Successful speaking is a journey not a destination. You will never reach the ultimate perfection, there is always more to learn and improve.

Successful communicators have a healthy self esteem. They are happy with themselves and accept their skills and knowledge without losing sight of their own shortcomings. People with a balanced self esteem can look at themselves realistically and are able to laugh at their mistakes. In order to improve ourselves we need a healthy self esteem. We need to, not only accept, but invite honest evaluation, even criticism without feeling threatened.

People with low self esteem on the other hand will not think highly of themselves. They will constantly depend on other people’s approval of them. They have low self worth; they are not able to look at themselves realistically. They overrate their shortcomings and undervalue their uniqueness, their skills, talents and personality. They feel threatened by people who evaluate, let alone, criticize them.

The stunning thing is that learning to communicate better can help you on three levels:

1.      You will increase your effectiveness as a communicator which will improve your relationships, family life and help you reach higher echelons in your career or business.

2.      You will improve your self esteem. Since you will be more and more successful in your career and relationships, your confidence will improve, you will accept yourself more and more and therefore will be happier and more relaxed.
3.      These two successful steps will have you hooked to wanting more success and the cycle keeps repeating itself over and over again, for as long as you learn and improve yourself.
If you already have a healthy self esteem, the tips and tricks of this website: www.your-public-speaking.com will help you on your personal journey to success. You can go as fast or as slow as is practical for you and use the tips and tricks as you need them. Pretty soon, without realizing it, you will have improved your public speaking and communication skills a little bit or a lot.

But if your self esteem is very low and you have great fear of speaking up and standing in front of people who might judge your performance, then these pages might be too advanced for you. I suggest that you start by joining one of the many Toastmasters Clubs all over the world. They provide a positive and comforting environment for you to start practicing speaking up.  As soon as your self esteem has improved, then please come back!

Success!
